Penguin Games and the Six Basic Cues
October 31, 2025 :: 6-9pm :: Pets Behave, Niceville, Florida
For the October’s Workshop, we will begin with an overview of the 6 Basic Handling Cues. We will go over each cue, what they are, how and where they are applied and why your dog naturally understands what they are and how they affect their movement on course. With this knowledge we will go back to the beginning and use the first 4 basic cues to maneuver through a few short sequences. Because our dogs are naturally very good at understanding our body cues, we will then become very conscious of how we use/move our body on course. You will learn why dogs do what they do if your basic cues are ill-timed or ill-placed.
I find that when handlers quiet their arm movement and their mouth, the dogs actually “listen” better. Very likely you will discover that when these cues are applied correctly, calling the dog’s name or yelling “come!” or “here!” several times during a run will be things of the past. This is always an eye-opening experience and many times students ask me “why didn’t I know this before?”
This is a great opportunity for young teams to improve their teamwork and for seasoned teams to up their game and become really clear about their handling cues … all without the use of their arms or verbals. Sound difficult? Most handlers find that practicing Penguin games actually makes their job EASIER.
This workshop is for dog/handler Teams who can maneuver a 6-8 obstacle course. We will be using just jumps and a tunnel. These short courses are designed so that you will have several opportunities to use the different cues and immediately see their effectiveness.
